Tilly and I had a late afternoon trot round the old barley field yesterday. The sky was pale blue and the light was golden. There were columns of gnats, dancing in the sunlight, and the woodland strip, along the south side of the field, glowed, as the vibrant autumn colours kick in.
Along the edge of burn, on the north side, there was plenty of mellow fruitfulness. Crab apple trees, hawthorn, elderberry, and sloe. As we walked through the grassy field margin we put up a couple of handsome hares. The thrill of seeing them never leaves me. We must have passed very close to one; it suddenly started up from behind us, and zoomed off at high speed.
We were being watched from the neighbouring field, on the other side of the burn, by this lovely beast!
